Contemporary

Ages 10+

Creative, expressive and technically challenging. Contemporary encourages dancers to explore movement, take artistic risks and develop a voice of their own.

Contemporary class at Turning Pointe Dance Theatre

What Dancers Learn

  • Floor work, release technique and momentum
  • Improvisation and movement invention
  • Contraction, suspension and fall-and-recovery
  • Choreographic structure and artistic intent

Levels We Offer

Contemporary

Ages 10+ with a technical foundation in ballet or jazz.

Advanced Contemporary

By instructor placement; includes student choreography.

Contemporary Dress Code

Proper dance attire helps our teachers see alignment and keeps every dancer safe.

All levels

  • Black leotard & shorts
  • Tan tights
  • Bare feet or tan turner shoes
Hair should be secured away from the face — a bun is required for all ballet classes. Please leave jewelry at home, and label shoes and dance bags with your dancer's name.

Contemporary Questions

What age is right to start contemporary?

Ten and up, once a dancer has enough technique and body awareness to work safely on the floor.

Do dancers create their own choreography?

In the advanced level, yes. Improvisation and student-made phrases are part of the work.

Do we dance barefoot?

Usually. Some pieces use tan turner shoes — your instructor will let you know.
